Venice Insights and Highlights: a first orientation
This first-timer Venice orientation leads us first to the great theater of Venetian history: St. Mark's Square, once the political and governmnetal center of the city, exuding glory, power and concealing intrigues of its past. We’ll also visit the area beyond the Rialto Bridge, formerly one of the most renowned financial centers in Europe, and today a lively food market and and still a favorite meeting spot for many Venetians.
We’ll also walk through some areas of the city that still exhibit their original flair and charm, discovering along the way how Venice emerged from a mushy swamp into a maze of bridges, alleyways, squares and canals, still today overlooked by the once splendid, but still captivating facades of ancient merchant palaces.
For a glimpse into the lifestyle of that “swinging” period, the Rococo, we have the option of visiting the small Mocenigo museum, a 17th century palace, which until a few decades ago was inhabited by the noble Mocenigo family. It hosts a precious furniture collection, with chandeliers, paintings, stuccoes and a small collection of original garments from the 1700s to the early 1900s.
